Podcast popoff popped off (a.k.a. XM and Sirius commence the bidding war)

The creation of this podcast was fueled by a mixture of spite and competitive spirit after having an e-argument with my good friend/ex-radioshow-co-host/hater extraordinaire J dot Pitts. After trying to explain to him that his "playlist lacked punch" and telling him he "made hip-hop seem boring" this mix was meant to serve as an audial reminder of how it's supposed to sound. Unfortunately, the way my mansion is currently setup my turntables are located in a totally different wing than my computer hence I was limited by logistics and technology while recording. If there is a next time I hope to introduce the decks and perhaps a microphone into the proverbial and literal mix. Anyhow these offerings should provide a nice distraction to all you cubicle warriors out there bored at work, tell your friends.

On a totally unrelated note The Roots - Game Theory is a near classic. Top to bottom hotness, support if you can or "if you don't got no paper then steal this CD" as Mr. Thought so eloquently puts it.

So instead of doing a new post / overkill on Prince Paul, I thought I'd take this time to shine a bit of a spotlight on some dope Canadian independent hiphop, that, for the most part, has been overlooked by the masses (albeit, madly craved by rap record nerds worldwide.)

First up we got Concrete Mob. Consisting of DeuceDeuce and BlackJack, Concrete Mob dropped the ridiculously hot single, Boiling Point, in 1996 on Groove-A-Lot Records. It was featured on BeatFactory's Rap Essentials Vol. 1 (essential for anyone wanting to check some independent Canadian hip hop) and was by far the best song on the single as well as the best song of the Mob's career. According to the credits, the single was to be the leadoff to a forthcoming album entitled: Dreams, Snakes & Landscapes, but as far as I know/can tell, that album never did see the light of day. I know that a slimmed down Mob.. consisting of just DeuceDeuce at that point, dropped a single in 2001, that was not very noteworthy/good and they seem to have disappeared off the face of the rap planet, but I did come across their website here. Produced by Scam and engineered by the great Dr. Frankenstein, it's a single everyone should check.

Next up we have the Canadian indie favourite, Ice Breaker Classic from fairly-unknown crew, Brass Tacks. Beyond the fact that nobody I know in Toronto has this record (it being made in Toronto), I really can't tell you a lot. The boys from Down To Erf produced both songs on this record, which was one of maybe two or three records that Brass Tacks put out in their short-lived careers. Definately a 12" worth tracking down. Thanks to the homies over at www.labelscans.com for the picture, otherwise I'd have nothing to accompany this. If anyone has this 12" and wants to get rid of it, hit me up here.

As LA had its Project Blowed, and New York had its Lyricist Lounge, Toronto had our very own showcase of local talent dubbed Planet Mars. It was a place for local artists to perform and develop their talents and as one can see from the artists listed on this particular EP, it was a great beginning for many of Canada's top hiphop talent. Put out in collaboration between KneeDeep Entertainment and MMS Direct, this EP was to showcase the kind of talent that did perform at these shows and what a snapshot. As you can see from the picture, you get early tracks from K-Os, Nefarius, Frankenstein, Kardinal, Choclair, etc, etc.. and although none of the tracks are mindblowingly dope, its a good snapshot of the Toronto rap scene circa 1998. I got a little lazy on this one and just mp3'd one whole side of the record, so you get to hear (in order): "Conversations" by Solitair, Marvel & Choclair; "Rhyme, Shine & Buss" by Kardinal Offishall feat. YLooK; and "No Chorus" by the legendary Nefarius...

Various Artists - Planet Mars EP Side 1 (Planet Mars EP, Kneedeep/MMS, 1998)

Got touched? Next up we got what I think is the future of Canadian hiphop. Invizible Touch has been putting it down for years behind the boards but are now preparing their debut album which is guarenteed to be fire. Ash Brigiz can rap.. dude is amazing, really.. and yeah, I know their will be obvious Eminem comparisons.. but being compared to one of the best contemporary rappers is not necessarily a bad thing. Anyhow, these are my boys and I hope to help put out their debut record so check out the song, check out their website at www.it3.ca and support these cats, cause they are super dope.

Invizible Touch - Man Up (Unreleased, 200?)

Good ol' Saukrates. Probably the most famous and most talented of Canadian hip hop artists to emerge out of the mid 90's scene was Big Sox. He was signed to Redman's label but, unfortunately, I don't think we'll ever see an album on Gillahouse. Like his original LP, Father Time, Sauks seems to have a problem with getting full lengths released to the public, that is, unless they're r&b projects like his Big Black Lincoln vehicle. Anyhow, this isn't a Hate Runs Deep post, although I do suggest you find the song/record and listen to it, as its just some amazing hip hop. What I included here is actually a song from new Canadian talent, King Reign, featuring Sauks on the hook and one superhot verse. This song is really dope and King Reign can rap, I'm quite surprised this single didn't make more noise than it did. Subsequent to this 12", Reign joined forces with the reformed Brassmunk crew and can be heard on their new recordings.

King Reign - Guity Party feat. Saukrates (Guilty Party 12", Renegade, 2005)

Mathematik first appeared on the scene as part of the Down To Erf crew who dropped a record or two but were known more for their production for other Toronto crews like Citizen Kane or the aforementioned Brass Tacks. Mathematik, or Math-U as he would later be known, decided to go solo around 1998 when he dropped his first solo single, Better By The Letter. A great song and a definate high point of the Canadian indie rap scene, Math got that dope laid back, intelligent flow, almost like a male version of Bahamadia. So right before he dropped his debut album in 1999, Ecology, Math appeared on some compilations which featured his track, Following Goals, featuring Bahamadia. Although the song was remixed by Frankenstein for a subsequent single from that album, Math-U had it remixed AGAIN and released as the 'debut' single from Ecology. Here, for your listening enjoyment, is Remix #2 (that I know of, at least) of Following Goals, from his leadoff single to Ecology, featuring Bahamadia.

Lastly, I close with what I believe was a one-off single by Toronto rap crew, N.O.N.-E.Quation.. not much info on this one either unfortunately. It was released in 1997 on Blueprint Records, the same label that put out much of Thrust's work and was produced by a friend of my homie DJ Dialog's... DJ Muziklee Inzane. Nothing terribly mindblowing here, but a good snapshot indicative of that mid-to-late 90s Canadian indie rap sound.

So after kinda dissing the MSTRKRFT album, I came across these remixes for wolf-band-du-jour (or maybe not anymore, am i that far behind already?), Wolfmother and their new single, "Woman". I haven't heard the original, but this is a nice remix, with MSTRKRFT adding that .. uhm.. MSTRKRFT touch (that is a good thing). As i previoulsy mentioned, I think MSTRKRFT are best working with vocal tracks and this is another fine example.

On the flip we got a remix from turntablist/cut-n-paste crew, The Avalanches. They definately up the rappity rap factor on the single and actually do, in this bloggers humble opinion, a much better remix of the song. On a side note, if you're feeling these songs, go bid on them on ebay here. War Child Music is auctioning the Wolfmother singles as well as a variety of other assorted musical goods to raise funds for the War Child organization, and I definately urge people to support, and get some great music while you're at it.

Yo Yo, I Know The Dew Doo Man: Prince Paul Part 3

"Ooooooh, the dew doo man." Probably the most famous of Paul's more obscure records, and known more for the b-side than anything else. Mr. Boops was the first single released by Paul's group, Resident Alien, consisting of himself, Dres from Black Sheep, Maceo from De La Soul and Mic Teluxe. May have involved more people because I've heard subsequent songs that featured other vocals which leads me to believe it may have just been a revolving cast, similar to Paul's other later projects. It was the lead single to what was supposed to be, but shelved, debut LP from Resident Alien, It Takes A Nation Of Suckas To Let Us In. Anyhow, I've included the vocal versions of all known (to me at least) Resident Alien joints.

Its unfortunately that this album got shelved as Paul's song is really dope, and I was really happy to see it included on the compilation. Enjoy.

Another fairly recent (at least in the context of Paul's entire career), and perhaps more high profile gig for Paul (as of late at least), was his remix for his-once-protoge, Last Emperor. Secret Wars was a classic song and I believe Last Emp's first record and Paul really doesn't add a whole lot to the song, but doesn't take anything away either. Just a different take on a fairly dope song. Was part of MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch album too..

Another strange remix by Paul was the one he provided for The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. I know they did some work recently with DJ Shadow and perhaps have hiphop leanings as there is also a Killah Priest appearance on this remix record, but beyond that I'm not sure on their connection to Paul. "recorded, engineered, mixed and raped by prince paul at paul's coffe (sic) shop, l.i. guitars, scratches and piao(sic) by prince paul."

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Blues 'XXX' Man (Experimental Remixes, Mute, 2000)

(No, that's not Justin Warfield.)

And closing off this part 3 piece of Paul discography is a song that I'm not even entirely sure he was involved in. Fallin' is taken from the Judgement Night soundtrack and also appeared as a promo-only 12" in 1993 on Immortal Records. Due to the date of the recordings, I'm inclined to think Paul was involved and it does have that De La Feel to it, especially the remix, but cannot guarentee it. Nonetheless, a great song. And who could forget Justin Warfield? He dropped an lp on Qwest back in 93, with a couple songs produced by Paul. Two of the three songs Paul did produce ended up being the lead single to the album. Here's the b-side to that single, Dip Dip Divin'.

Chest Rockwell Presents Prince Paul Part 2

So first up for part 2 of this Paul piece are two mixes Paul did of the Black, Rock & Ron single, You Can't Do Me None. Paul does a real rappy, over a bunch of breaks remix and then more of a straightforward beat mix for these joints. Nothing super spectacular, but I love the original remix Paul did.

Next up we have the infamous Paul Barman. Not a lot of people seem to like this guy, but Prince Paul does! Paul basically put him on the map by producing his debut EP, Its Very Stimulating..., which came out on Wordsound in 2000. A funny little EP which will definately have its fanbase, but definately not for everyone, it was entirely produced by Prince Paul who also provides some vocals (as sampled for Paul Barman's 12", "How Hard Is That?"). Included here is the funny ass Salvation Barmy..

Following along the Wordsound lines, next up is a remix Paul did for homie Scotty Hard. Scotty Hard aka Scott Harding is a Canadian cat who been down in the rap game for a long time. He's engineered everyone from Ultramagnetic to Handsome Boy, was part of New Kingdom and dropped a rap 12" and lp (The Return Of Kill Dog E) on Wordsound. He engineered a fair number of Paul projects as well and Paul returns the favour here with a dope remix flipping the same sample as Killah Priest's "One Step".

Scotty Hard - Who Said (What?) Feat. King Cobra, Watah Mokk & Horus (Prince Paul Remix) (Who Said (What?) 12", Wordsound, 1999)

"The Dix CAME on the scene in 1957 as the “Bangkoks”. With Original members Orgynius, Peter O Tool, Tro John and John Handcock. The Bangkoks boasted a top ten hit called “Love Biscuit,“ which was the anthem of every blue light house party in “1962”. The Bangkoks reassembled as the Dix in 1965 with the addition of new group members Dik Gracin and the Jonsun brothers thus creating a brand new sound that could only be described as “ORGASMIC”...Peter O Tool further explains, “The Bangkoks had something BIG to offer the people but the Dix really hit the spot.”" (Taken from Smack Records website)

One of Paul's most recent projects was The Dix. This project, as far as I know flopped terribly and its easy to see why. A "mock" funk/soul group consisting of Paul, Bimos, Mr. Dead, Buster Bus, Paul Barman, Mr. Len and other Paul-collaborators.. this was a one-note joke that really didn't go anywhere. I mean, I enjoyed it.. but I dickride Paul and it was a real stretch for me to thoroughly enjoy this. Anyhow, the first single from the album, Here Comes The Dix, was kinda dope and featured Mr. Dead aka Peter O Tool dropping some dope vocals.. check it out

The CD release of the album also includes a humourous DVD-documentary about the band, definately worth checking out. Not nearly as funny as the Diary Of Prince Paul, but still worth checking out. I'm going to try and get some clips of both up here shortly.

Back on the more obscure tip, next up we got two Paul remixes of the Living Color song, Funny Vibe. Originally produced by Ed Stasium.. its kind've a stretch to see Paul hooking up with them. However, Paul actually went on to produce/co-produce a vast majority of Living Color guitarist Vernon Reid's solo album, Mistaken Identity. Daddy-O provides the raps and Public Enemy make a special (and uncredited) appearance.

Again, connecting Daddy-O with Prince Paul, as well as DBC from Stet on this one, is a remix Paul did for British female rap crew, Cookie Crew. Originally produced by Daddy-O and DBC.. Paul provides a 'Dope Mix' for this one.. worth checking out.

Its just good. I can't explain. But to follow it up and not just give you some radio joint, here is an accoustic performance of Nelly doing Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" at a recent show. Sent to me by a friend who grabbed it from another blog, who will get due credit as soon as I find out.

Finally, just some complete randomness, a dope CNN/Heatmakers collabo and a one off 45 produced by David Axelrod of the group, The Dillards.

CNN - City Boys (Crack On Wax, Major League, 2005) Some Heatmakers heat featuring Capone & Noreaga and some of their weed carriers. Shows how them Heatmakers can flip those hot vocal samples.. thanks to Journey.

The Dillards - Lemon Chimes (Lemon Chimes 7", Capitol, 1972) Random folk-rocksy 45 thrown in that I came across through a friend. Not really that hot at all, but was a one off single by The Dillards produced by David Axelrod... they later changed labels and re-recorded them for a subsequent album.

A Tribute To A Weed Owner, Disco Is Dead and Other Loose Ends

I googled E Moneybags and this is the best I could come up with. I really know next to nothing about this guy besides the fact that he recorded with everyone from 2Pac to half the Queensbridge scene, including Mobb, Capone N Noreaga, Nas, Nature, Kool G Rap, etc, etc. Seeing as how I can find no info on this guy beyond the fact that he was murdered a couple years back by Supreme's people (according to the homie, Negative Props) , my best guess is this dude was a serious weed owner. what other explanation to him having all these emcees on his records? to further my thesis, my best guess would be that some of these cats were carriers for Moneybags back in the day pre-rap fame. MSTRKRFT Album. To anyone whose been reading this from the get go know that I champion MSTRKRFT at any given opportunity... and this is not one. Had to chance to check out their debut CD, "The Looks", and the first word that comes to mind is disappointing. Followed closely by repetitive. The problem with MSTRKRFT is these are not finely nuanced instrumentals, nor are they non-stop party groovers... they are in desperate need of some vocal help, as all the best tracks by MSTRKRFT (or at least the ones I've championed) are remixes of vocal tracks. Really too bad they didn't at least include the Metric remix on this album. So here's the two tracks that have the closest resemblance to vocals.. and also the two tracks that stuck out most for me off this.

I toyed with the idea of having a set format of new songs to post.. like one new song, one classic, one random, etc.. but scrapped that for the time being. So here's some songs that were going to fit into that format somehow but are now making it as random odds and ends.

Brethren - Outside Love (Brethren, Tiffany, 1970) Amazing track, with dope break.. from an incredible record that is far too slept on.
Brethren - Success Brand Oil (Brethren, Tiffany, 1970) Really great instrumental off the same album. Don't know too much about these guys, but they did cut 2 lp's for tiffany and worked with Dr. John. Apparently they were also serious studio musicians playing on a lot of records too, but I can't seem to find any info that confirms or denies this. Maybe I'm just too lazy, anyhow.. enjoy
Freddie Scott and The Four Steps - Same Ole Beat (Take A Rest 7", Marlin, 196?) First 45 that I ever dropped serious dough on (serious for me, which isn't that much for you real 45 junkies). Some people may ask why.. well, if I have to explain after hearing this burner, I guess we just have different taste in music.
CRU - Rhythm Blunt Cru (Bubblin' Promo 12", Def Jam, 1997) Exclusive to the promo version of the Bubblin' 12", this was CRU's jacking-for-beats-song. Pretty dope, and fairly random.. just something I haven't heard in years that I threw on recently.

Not the rarest of tracks by Paul, but I definately think important and indicitave of the kind of person Paul is and where his music comes from. Appeared originally on the Wordsound compilation "Subterreanean Hitz Vol. 1", and then again on the recently issued "Hip Hop Gold Dust" on Antidote.

Prince Paul - Sucker For Love (Subterreanean Hitz Vol. 1, Wordsound, 1996)

This album is fantastic. I think everyone should own at least one copy of it. Yes, I am a self admitted Paul dickrider, but this record is just too good. According to some interview I read, Paul made this record in a dark period of his life and is reflected seriously in the music. Anyone who listens to this record could easily see that. Sort of the flipside to the happy-stylings of De La era Paul, and more in line with his Gravediggaz project. I've included the first two 'tracks' from the Wordsound version of Psychoanalysis: What is it? as one track and the exclusive-to-wordsound-pressing song, "The Bitch Blues (Life Experiences)", an expletitive-laden narrative courtesy frequent Paul collaborator, Bimos.

I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and say the Gravediggaz need not an introduction, but for that person, here it goes. A "super group" consisting of: Prince Paul, who was also the mastermind behind this project; Fruitkwan, Paul's old homie from Stetsasonic; Too Poetic, old schooler with ties to Paul from way back in the day; and Rzarector, a young Wu-Tang legend-in-the-making, and friend of Paul. Often referred to as the innovators of that amazing subgenre, "horrorcore" (which without we may never have had Flatlinerz, Necro, etc), and was generally in the same vein as the Psychoanalysis record, or rather vice versa as this album predates Psycho.., but a definate indicator of the sound Paul was leaning towards.

Onto the more what the... - worthy remixes.. here's two spanning from the late 80's to the mid-late 90's.. both fairly popular mainstream songs. and both get the remix treatment from Paul Huston.

I hopped on this blog as a contributor months ago but like a Scott Layden Knick's draftpick I've yet to see any action. I've got my excuses, such as the fact I'm without file hosting or that I'm a pharmacide survivor suffering from a pervasive case of Candida overgrowth. There are also the legal troubles and the possible jail time on the horizon. The truth of the matter is though, I've been waiting to poli in the war room with my homepiss Spitrock in T Dot about if, where and how I should P.M.P, or if I should instead L.F.S.... anyone "undadig" these obscure Noreaga-lyric acronyms? Anyway, I got a few ideas but I don't know if this is the appropriate cyberplace for them, or if one exists at all for that matter. In the meantime I've decided to post some links I've come across in the past couple of days. They are indicative of my surfing habits as of late so take a venture through my ilife or e-existence or whatever you will.

Thom Yorke - The Eraser mp3s (via M3 Online) Being both poor and unlucky I've failed to procure tickets to see Radiohead for any of the North American tour dates this month. In a way this serves me right because on hearing of this short tour of small venues I had contemplated buying up tickets for resale myself as a way to cover the price of my own ticket. I then proceeded to tell people around me about the tour playing up the speculation aspect. This was in fact a ploy to improve my chances of getting to a show but no one gave a fuck and it seems to have only hurt my karma. To make matters worse I was out of town doing the transient lifestyle thing (sans computer) when the tickets went on presale. It goes without saying that I was repeatedly dissed on ticketmaster.com with the general public tickets selling out in less than a minute for all the shows. Being the masochist I am, I've since been following prices obsessively on ebay and have keeping up with tour news here and there. As far as the Thom Yorke link, promos of the album were reported received at various press outlets so I knew a rip was imminent. The M3 Online post is the first link I found to music. It is kinda a spoiler in that they posted my two favorite tracks from the record. This academic-style blog has some interesting things to say about the lp and it's artwork as well. I'm still undecided as far as how much I like this album, it has some beautiful moments for sure though.
Menthol 10s by ARI (via Kix and the City) Another thing I'm undecided on is the whole "street wear culture" phenomenon that is popping off crazy now. Before last month I haven't purchased a pair of sneakers since the summer of 1999. The idea of hunting down exclusive kicks like I had done in middle school seemed really weak when confronted with ideas like the Blackspot Sneaker. Regardless of all that, these Newpie inspired jump-offs are super fresh. In alot of ways they are sicker than most of the shoes being offered because they are knocks offs. Anyway, being that there is such a limited run they are sure to be fetching something ridiculous when they drop. Peep the interview, as it is a thought-provoking and intelligent read.
Dangerdoom - Occult Hymn EP (via [adult swim]) Saw this link on the Stones Throws site yesterday. It is always dope to hear new Doom in my book, even if it's just him rerecording a verse, the superflowah rarely disappoints. The only bad thing I have to say is that the rift with the Monsta Island Czars is perpetuated on the El Chupa Nibre remix.
Bloc Party - Full Coachella set download (via BLOG PARTY) This is older but I decided to to tack it on. 10 song set including two new songs with a bonus interview thrown in for good measure.

As some background me and spit go waaaay back, I've was known to get up with a maxell XLII, a Y-Cable and l3enc waaaaaaaaaay back when, my life is like a movie and my current anonymity is a mystery. Also, I loathe Dip Set and I live at home with my mom. I can be touched via myspace. love -p

So I'm still procrastinating on the whole Prince Paul and Large Professor posts, so I figured I'd post two songs I'm really feeling right now. One is from popstress, Annie, and is on the same 12" as my previously posted Heartbeat MSTRKRFT Remix. Its some dancey type stuff, not my regular fair, but something I like as of late. Can't really tell you a whole lot about it other than its remixed by Riton, who I believe does a fair amount of these dance-remix type deals. Not for everyone, but again, I like it.. and this is my blog, so I'll post it if I want to. The second track I'm putting up is from the forthcoming sophomore album from TV On The Radio. The name of the track is Tonight and it certainly sounds like a remake of an older/famous song (at least uses the same melody) that I can' think of the name right now. Again, not really rappity rap rap, but I enjoy, so effit. Hope the three people who read this will enjoy these tracks and will bear with me in my procrastinatory ways towards the Paul(x2) posts. Oh yeah, and for good measure, and to add some rappity rap content I'm posting a track from Saukrates' side project, Big Black Lincoln. As we all anxiously await new rap material from Big Sox, he has just recently released this r&b project's debut album, Heaven's Caught On Fire. Again, not really rappy.. but a song I've been enjoying as of late.. until next time..

So for anyone checking (and I highly doubt this) for the Prince Paul and Large Professor posts, they are still coming; and soon.. I've just been slightly sidetracked as of late, and part of that sidetracking is thanks to newly minted Definitive Jux artist, Despot. I knew of him from that single he dropped from Def Jux 3, Homesickness / Life with Snarky Parker (not actually looking at the record at the moment so forgive me if I have the title slightly off), which I enjoyed but it wasn't until I stumbled across his new song, Crap Artists, that I really started paying attention. This beat (possibly by Blockhead?, sounds in the same vein as Aesop Rock's "Attention Span") is ridiculoid, and Despot just rides it... its hot. So support this kid.. you can find him here. Golden Shower Hour

Sorry to disappoint all you googling looking for some sort of watersports-affiliated-website, but this post is to announce some great news from a great group that everyone should check out, Third Sight. On top of the news that their new album, Symbionese Liberation Army, will be released on vinyl shortly.. there is word that they are in negotiation with a record label to have Golden Shower Hour finally repressed again.. AND, will come with some sort of bonus 45 or other similiar promotion. I can not wait, and neither should you. Jihad always comes with it (as does the rest of the crew), and people really need to stop sleeping on them. Anyhow, as a tease for my upcoming producer/remix posts.. i'm putting these three tracks up...

Kid 'N Play - Slippin' (Large Professor Remix) ... one of the last (if not THE last) singles from these guys. Can't honestly say i was ever really a fan of these guys.. but Extra P just kills the production on this remix. Classic Paul Sea production.
Arrested Development - Ease My Mind (DJ Premier Remix) .. apparently this was a test-pressing only remix of this semi-hit for AD... primo does a nice job on the remix.. not an amazing track, but essential for primo enthusiasts and not necessarily that bad either.
Too Short - In The Trunk (DJ Premier Remix) ... as blasphemous as it may seem, i've never been that big a fan of too short. i mean, i don't hate the guy, but i don't idolize him as many rap fans my age seem to do. yeah he was prolific.. a pioneer.. etc, but that doesn't mean i have to love everything he does. Needless to say, i picked up a sealed copy of this record for a friend and thought it would be time to re-check this.. not a bad remix at all, nothing crazy.. interestingly enough Daddy Kev re-used this same beat for the Awol One track, "That One Song You Play When You're Faded" off of Slanguage (thanks Darwin for the heads up on that one)
Third Sight - Murder Death Kill ... not some obscure remix or anything like that.. i just feel the need to post a track from them considering the news of their forthcoming lp(s) inspired me to write this post. Great track from an equally amazing EP of the same name. Definately worth tracking down if you can... or maybe a repress in the works?

This is probably a little late in the whole bandwagon jumping process, but as mentioned last time, i thought i'd do a post on the toronto (east york for life) duo, MSTRKRFT. Comprised of 1/2 of Death From Above 1979 (Jesse F Keeler) and DFA1979's producer, Al-P, MSTRKRFT have been doing the whole dance/house/disco-rock remix thing for a while and have just recently released their debut single for their forthcoming album on Last Gang Records.

Now those of you who know me really well may be surprised by my official dickrider stance on MSTRKRFT, i don't know what else to say other than for the most part their remixes actually make me want to get up and dance. And very rarely have i ever thought that, let alone committed it to some form of media, that i would be championing dance music - but these guys are doing it great. Maybe i missed out on the whole house craze years back, but if its anything like what MSTRKRFT is doing, mayhaps I will have to look into it.

For your listening pleasure, I have compiled a variety of MSTRKRFT songs that show their remixing abilities at its finest. Four of these tracks can be found on the (supposedly-not, but i have yet to see it otherwise) promo-only Vice vs. MSTRKRFT 12" put out by Vice Records. (Big ups to the homie Chris on hooking me up with the 12").

Annie - Heartbeat (MSTRKRFT Remix) ... not sure how I'd generally feel about Annie's music, but this remix really does it for me.. i have played this song to death for the last little while, and i hope at least a certain demographic of readers out there can relate... oh well, if not.. fuck'm.. this is on the Vice 12" and is also on a 12" put out by Big Beat complete with DFA/James Iha/some other dude i can't think of remixes... surprisingly as much as i dickride this song, the Riton Vocal Remix of her song "Happy Without You" is pretty darn kick ass too.
Juliette & The Licks - Love To Kill (MSTRKRFT Remix) .. this is the group fronted by filim star Juliette Lewis and i really can't give you much more info on them. This remix is in fact the only material I've heard from her/them, and is incredibly dope, but i'm still a little gunshy on checking out any of her other material. I think i chalk me liking this one almost exclusively because of the MSTRKRFT Remix.
Metric - Monster Hospital (MSTRKRFT Remix) .. i kinda like the metric that i've heard.. not a huge fan but Emily Haines is hot and i like her vocals.. just never really got into metric; although i'm 99.2% sure that i have heard the original of this, this remix blows it out of the water. Similar to the Juliette & The Licks track in the sense that I think MSTRKRFT really nailed what the song originally should've sounded like.. which is what i think is the goal of remixes in general. This can be found on the limited edition single "Easy Love" from MSTRKRFT (their first official 12" from their forthcoming debut lp) on Last Gang records.
The Panthers - Thank Me With Your Hands (MSTRKRFT Remix) ... again, don't know much about the panthers beyond the fact that they're on Vice, and Vice is generally a purveyor of quality goods. Their album is pretty nice, the original of this being the standout cut (for me, at least). This can also be found on the Vice vs. MSTRKRFT 12" as well as, as a 12" single, also from Vice, under the name The Panthers - Thanks For The Simulacra / Remix.. (can someone explain that to me?)
Bloc Party - Two More Years (MSTRKRFT Remix) ..i love bloc party. i love mstrkrft. here they meet. and mstrkrft really kicks it up a notch on the remix. definately more dance-rock-oriented than some of the other remixes (Annie comes to mind immediately).. just good music.. also courtesy Vice records.. if you haven't figured it out yet folks.. i'm really trying to sell people on the Vice vs. MSTRKRFT 12" cause its fantastic and features most of the songs i've mentioned already. Also of lesser note is the DFA1979 remake of Luno by Bloc Party is produced by MSTRKRFT. and while i'm on this little bloc party tangent, let me say that diplo's remix of Helicopter is horrid. really really bad. i don't know what happened but i am not feeling his remix in the least. k.. side tangent is done.

And so ends my expose (fancy little accent on the e thurrr) on mstrkrft.. probably old news to most of you, but i hope a couple people are turned onto something new they haven't heard. ah well.. at least i've got a little bit of inspirado back, so due very shortly are remix pieces on two of my favourite hip hop producers ever: Prince Paul and Large Professor.. and yeah, i'm going to try and keep it as obscure as possible, until next time.. enjoy

The Search For Inspirado

Juxed the title for this post from good ol' Tenacious D. I can empathize with their search for inspirado completely at this particular moment. I've put off writing anything on this site in hopes of some divine (creative) intervention of sorts, but to no avail. So here i am writing about waiting for something to write about in hopes that it'll get those creative juices going. So.. onto media-related things that i have been interested in as of late:

V For Vendetta ... can't escape the idea that the Wachowski (sp?) brothers were just drugheads from the rave scene who snorted their way to their "unique" vision of the world (see The Matrix).. and this movie doesn't help much either. Don't get me wrong, its visually entertaining and holds the viewer for most of the filim, however.. they just keep beating the viewer over the head with the whole 1984/Big Brother is Watching/The US Government is bad message. We get it. Big brother bad. The current state of the United States dictatorship bad. War bad. Go personal rights. I think i may have just puked in my mouth a little. Too preachy for me... but i did kinda like it too.
Ghostface - Fishscale ... I have done a complete 180 in my regards to mr. starks. originally.. some years ago, i declared iron man to be the beginning of the fall of the wu empire.. and for the most part i thought i was right - that is.. until the "Milk 'Em" 12" was put out, where Ghost and Trife just kill it. Not to say i was completely ignant of ghost's output.. and i very much enjoyed 'the drummer' from him (can't remember what album that's from), but this particular record opened my ears to Ghost and had me go back and check his older stuff. I have a newfound enjoyment of his records and that definately is my feeling on this new one. A very solid effort, with some great tracks and some filler.. but the songs that hit, really hit. The Champ.. produced by Just Blaze is ridiculous. Straight forward boom bap rap. Kind of upset with the old/recycled MF beats.. but to each their own right?
The Sopranos - Season 6 ... How nice it was to have them back? I, along with legions of devoted fans, looked forward to the new season.. and i may be part of the minority in saying that so far the season has been disappointing. My initial appreciation for their return was met with, quite possibly, the worst episode in the history of the series, Episode 2 from season 6. The whole Kevin Finnerty (sp?) thing was a big waste of time, as has been the majority of this season so far. Not enough "family business". Although Paulie robbing/shooting up the drug dealers had me all excited that they were bringing it back to the goods.. alas, just a blip so far as its been focused mainly on tony's recovery and miniscule developments concerning the family. More drama with Johnny Sack is required. I want war!
Lost - great show. you should be up on it. i just pray it doesn't get all sci-fi/xfilesy/matrixy on our asses.

Other than that, just been listening to a lot of old records as of late.. i'll have some audio clips and reviews coming soon, but in the meantime, be sure to check the new Ghostface, and MSTRKRFT... who i am officially dickriding at the moment (dedicated post to them coming soon)... shouts to Chris at Vice for lacing a cracker.. lots of goods coming soon.. my apologies my absenteeism in posting new stuff, but that is being remedizzled as we speak. till next time

I've decided that I'm going to use lyrics from songs I like as titles for my posts because well.. it makes for more interesting titles than anything I could possibly think up. Notice how I'm actually working on capitalizing my I's and dotting my t's and whatnot... its in response to a review I received via BE. I hope that kind reviewer would comment or hit me off with an email as I greatly appreciated them taking out the time to give some feedback, and positive feedback (for the most part) to boot. I too would like to improve the site as you suggested but my perpetual procrasination sort've gets in the way. Well, that and my impending fame. I'm hoping on bringing in some more "staff writers" to help contribute to the content of this thing as I realize that my rants and raves and reviews can get tiresome, and I'm not nearly as witty as I fantasize myself to be, so here is my big huge public appeal to Justin, Meg and Brandon to hit me up with stuff to post on this site. They're all fantasticly smart people and funny and all that good stuff as well. So, hopefully, you will all get to read their insights in the near future.

I was thinking of posting some songs as that seems to be what some people just skip to, but its 4:30am in the morning and I'm far too fuzzy at the moment to choreograph that. I also got some hot new joints to post from The Oddities.. local dope hiphop crew, and some Sizzla and some other stuff, but I'll get more into that when I actually get around to posting the material.

In reality this post is my attempt at boring myself to sleep as I could so desperately use a few hours before I have to get to school which I have missed for the past two days due to my insomniactic tendencies. Yeah, I know that's not really a word, but I used it here so it is now. I think we live in a day and age where any word can be defined as being real, provided you get enough people to use it. So, like... go out and use insomniactic in your common vernacular and help me legitimize my loose use of the english language.

Again, if you haven't noticed as of yet, this paragraphing is completely arbitrary and more in hopes of having you read all the way down herrre. I really do suggest people read the archives of this site, not so much for the writing but for the music and links I posted. I wish i knew how to backtrack and all that shenanigans so I could point you in the right direction.. but alas, all in due time. Oh, I saw Hostel... very Saw-ish.. actually my initial reaction was Saw meets (i'm bracketing this because i don't know the name of the movie, but the one with Van Damme where he plays like a homeless guy who gets hunted by that guy with the weird face who looks like he has huge scars on each cheek and other rich guys who pay him to hunt homeless people).... i think its called the arrow or some wack shit like that. anyhow, decent view. not terribly good.. but not terribly bad either.

Also, lastly, I am posting this as to not completely offend random surfers who may not get the jist of the previous post which was meant for comedic purposes only and not to offend any gays or metrosexuals out there. Well.. thats a lie.. it very much was to offend metrosexuals and emo kids.. but thats it.. possibly the people who say 'no homo' as well. Not sure, don't care. Really need to get on that mix cd for you peoples out there.. I'm more than willing to take suggestions on a theme for a mix cd beyond 'music i'm listening to right now'.. it would help motivate me in that direction. So, get at me via any of the avenues you can get at me.. including just commenting here and help my procrastinatory self get some more productive things done.

Lastly.. got some great ideas in the works which I will post up as soon as plausible and as soon as they're actualized. but, don't hold your breath anytime soon. the only thing i'm better at than great ideas is procrastination.. and, er.. maybe self-loathing. fear and loathing in my mind. thats a cool post name, i'll use that later. it also appears as my internet connection has died, so hopefully, if you're reading this, it has been fixed. So the other night i was fucking this really hot guy (no homo) when we decided that we'd hit up the local bath house (no homo) for a huge gay orgy (no homo). After multiple homosexual encounters with random participants (no homo) I decided I'd venture off to the local pub and start blowing strangers in the bathroom stall (no homo). When all was said and done, I think I did like 20 guys that night (no homo) and look forward to more random homosexual experiences (no homo).

Phew.. glad I got that off my chest. If you're still reading this is my tongue-in-cheek response to the 'no homo' phenomena that seems to have taken a stranglehold of NY/LA/other trendsetting areas. Oh, and most specifically hiphop culture in general. I find it rather humorous that these people are so convinced that whatever they say might be construed as being homosexual that they have to justify their statements with a followup of 'no homo'. As if every single person in the world will be convinced that you're gay if you (being a guy) say something like, "I think the Diplomats are a great group. I especially like Juelz Santana (no homo)"... its the new 'I ain't queer or anything but...' (thanks Meg for reminding me on that one). Anyhow, I posted the above thing to show the ludicrousness of such statements. It's going to get to that point people, I swear. Makes me think of Ali G's Bruno character interviewing the priest who is convinced he can cure people of their gayness. It's ridiculous people. I think if anything, saying 'no homo' after things infers that you're more homosexual than if you hadn't. But that's just me and my sordid opinions.

So, in a backlash to this whole 'movement', if you will, I suggest the new craze be... 'no metro'.. as in not to be construed as metrosexual. Because... well.. let's be honest.. metrosexuality is fucking gay. In fact, I'd argue that metrosexuals are probably the most likely ones to use the phrase 'no homo' more than anyone else. But, that's just speculation. Anywho, (no metro) is to be used in day to day conversation where what is said can be construed as being of a metrosexual nature. For example:

Guy 1: I just got my hair did (no metro).

Other person: Like at a stylist or something?

Guy 1: No, I said no metro moron, that means I cut it at home with my fancy at-home-hair-cutting kit. I'm not one of them metrosexual-types that goes to a stylist or wears clothes that are fancier than my girl's.

Other person: Huh?

Guy 1: No metro.. like.. no metrosexual.. mormon.

Other person: Wha..?

Guy 1: Forget it, ok.. just fucking forget it, you are clearly sniffing paint thinner.

Other person: This isn't very witty dialogue y'know... people aren't going to read this far because it's simply not that funny.

Guy 1: I know, but I'm bored and to numb my brain even further I'm constructing a pseudo conversation between myself and some other version of me. I think. Wow, this is getting all like psychological and shit.

Anyhow.. you get the point, or at least I hope you do. If not, I bet the aforementioned mormonism applies to you (Authors note: Not trying to offend mormoms). And oh yeah, here's some new (to me at least) music that I've been enjoying as of late. Ch-ch-check it..

Missing Pilot - House (Unreleased Demo) ... don't know much about these guys besides that their friends of the homie, Brandon who put me onto them and BSS and countless other good music. He is a music genius unmatched.. except by me. and some other people.
Savant Rockwell - Archetype Architect ... another friend of my man B's (no homo) who does the rap thing purdie good. nice beat courtesy dj nice record work, nice lyrics, nice flow. enjoy.
J. Dilla - Stop! ... from his forthcoming Stones Throw release, Donuts. pretty dope rapppy rap rap stuff. figured i'd throw this up to balance out the whole half rocky / half rappy scale. enjoy.

so i have been checking out some other blogs as of late to see how i stack up and came to this conclusion. god i suck. i really need to up the ante in any of the following areas: wit, cohesiveness, having-a-point, humour, wit, humor, funniness, insight, wit, uhm... some other things i wrote on the back of a napkin.. but i ate it by accident in a fit of hunger. so anyway, yeah.. basically i need to improve this site greatly. all across the board. design. content. style. substance. other words for everything i already listed. etc. etc. etc. well, since i'm not very design inclined (but obviously poetically inclined), and i can't really do anything about my (lack of) style or substance, i figured i'd put up some more music for people to enjoy. so here it is. some stuff from 'the virgins' out of new york shitty. can't really give you too much info besides the fact that i think its just one dude named donald.. feel free to comment and leave more info if you know.. but expect to hear big things from the virgins/donald in the coming year... so enjoy:

haven't put one of these in a couple days. so i thought i'd take this opportunity to say that i hope everyone had a great giftmas/chanuka/kwaanzaa/etc. my heart goes out to this 15 year old girl who was shot and killed in downtown toronto by some wannabe thug kids. pathetic. anyhow. for all those who just peruse here either via blog explosion or myspace or whatever, i urge you to actually take a peek around, there's some great music to be found and some semi-witty banter by myself. yeah, the design sucks. i know i know. it will change shortly. trust me. enough self-aggrandizing on my part already. give it a shot. oh, and more new music tomorrow hopefully.

how about a flower? that shit always made me laugh. don't know why. perhaps my twisted sense of humour. mind you, my own jokes tend to make me laugh harder than anyone else. hell, if you can't entertain yourself, whats the point of trying to entertain others, right? hmm.. sure seems like i'm starting this off on a righteously-selfish-tangent. gooooooooooo meeeeeeee! wheeeeeeeeeeeee. i hope when my leg gets amputated, i can put a prosthetic roller skate on there so i can push myself along and glide whilst yelling out 'weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee'. again, at least that made me laugh. Giftmas was extremely depressing at the family's house. As per, at first comedically, prediction, it ended with all members of my family in different rooms of my mom's house, not talking to each other. its so depressing how alienated i am from the ones i truly care about. but enough about me. hope everyone elses giftmas/kwanzaa/chanukah/holiday was much better than mine. in a tough predicament at the moment.. going to have to decide between school, a job, or international rock stardom. each has their appeal and their drawback.. i really need some feedback here people. so please leave comments as to what you think i should do or email me or get at me at whatever avenue is easiest for you. and i'll have some more music up soon.

not really. but thought maybe random surfers might read this if they saw that. with that in mind. merry giftmas/kwaanzaa/hanukah/x-mas/christmas/etc. happy holidays. wish the best to you and yours. normally i think people would take this time to reflect. but i've pretty much done that up until this point. so time to act on it. saying goodbye to my former self. introducing the new non-procrastinatory, non-passive me. like a great poet once said, "procrastination is like masturbation, you're fucking yourself". amen to that. although its not the new year quite yet, i think its a great time to say goodbye. to a different time. to a different me. not forget the past... but to stop trying to hold onto it. to stop trying to control everything around me and just let things happen the way they're meant to happen. to try more. to not be so goddamn passive. to start seizing the moment. phew. for a decade there i lost myself. thank god i turned myself in, to the karma police. anyhow, enough about me and my cathartic ways. here's some music to tide you over until next time i can do one of these. Styles Of Beyond - Get It ... can't say enough good things about these guys. really great emcees over great beats. kinda shocked that its linkin park that put them on, and not vice versa. they're all over that fort minor album. just amazing dudes who i had the pleasure of meeting yeaaaaaaaars back here in toronto. worth checking out. for fans of dope music, rappity rap rap and beastie boys.
Blackalicious - Supreme People ... amazing song off their latest album, which, despite its ability to possibly blow them up, i believe to be their weakest effort to date. lots of critics will disagree. but, where were they when melodica came out? 9 years old? wow, that was a whole lot of bitter. check'm out. great song. for fans of dj shadow, latyrx, dope music, rappity rap rap
TV On The Radio - Modern Romance ... i posted a diplo mashup of these guys over some breakbeats only to hear the original shortly after and my realization is that diplo did next to nothing. but these guys are still great. and this is their great cover of a great song by another great band. thats like great cubed or some mathetmatical shit like that. for fans of indie goodness and dope music.
Flaming Lips - Fight Test ... i have mentioned these guys a bunch of times, and i really think they're a bit of fantastic, unfortunately this is the only mp3 i have of theirs. not necessarily their best effort, but it definately opened my eyes to their greatness and is definately worth checking out. for fans of altie-stuff.. dope music.. rappity rap rap
Four Tet - A Joy f. Percee P ... a great new school drum programmer/producer meets the legendary rhyme inspector Percee P. its really great. i think they bring out great stuff in each other. not necessarily perce's best verse to date, but a good idea of his skill for those who don't know him. kind of remixed version of the one that appears on four tet's newest record. for fans of rappity rap rap, old school rap, rap, rap rap rap rap rap, four tet, rap
Atmosphere - Scapegoat .. possibly one of my favorite songs of a great rap group that is finally getting their due in the semi-mainstream press/media. i'm sure in this day and age everyone has already downloaded their entire back catalogue (those who jumped on the bandwagon recently at least) thanks to your local p2p dealie.. but for those who haven't .. or just don't know about this amazing group yet.. enjoy. they are fan-fucking-tastic. and a good anthem for the old me. for fans of good music, rap, social commentary, etc.
East Flatbush Project - Tried By 12 .... a classic in modern indie rap. yet lots of people don't know the original song, just the instrumental. an all around classic, based around a simplistic drum pattern/sample (thanks al green!) and a harp? not entirely sure what he used to make that, but its fantastic. for fans of rap.
Method Man - Break Ups 2 Make Ups (DJ Krush Remix) ... i'm pretty sure i posted this before, maybe not. great remix to a great song by meth. posted to remind me of someone important from my... past. gotta stop holding on, but its hard.

not a whole lot to put up in this particular post. just haven't done one of these in a while so i thought i'd write something down for the loyal readers (all 3 of you). what can i say. the topic was inspired by a beautiful person i met recently who is a really good photographer. sums up how i feel a fair amount of the time. its nice to know others feel that way too. that's a weird statement but .. its a connection y'know? anyhow.
my particular rant today has to do with scenesters/hipsters. i hate people who jump on the bandwagon of whatever the hip new thing is. all these people who love the dirty dirt south now because its the hipster thing to enjoy. or baile funk. or grime. first off, let me say, i've enjoyed dirty south rap for about 10 years now (dating back to how outkast used to be and the first goodie mob record) but i'll also be the first to admit how fucking terrible most of the music is from down there. it was mocked by all those scenester/hipster types for so long for a reason. my point being people: don't just enjoy stuff cause its from the south and thats the hip shit right now, enjoy it cause its good. ditto for "grime". which i personally think is fucking horrible. the british really have a way of misinterpreting north american trends and "making them their own". grime is like 3rd rate techno with an mc who might have had 'skills' if we were judging skills by 1982 standards. the streets is horrible people. no matter how many magazines jump on mike skinner's dick, you will never be able to tell me he's not some at-best-mildly-witty brit who is a terrible rapper "rhyming" (and i use that term very loosely) over horrid "beats".
gotta give kudos to my man tyranny, from toronto but transplanted to nyc for the present being for putting me onto the 'pappachachis'.. random hipster types in nyc who take pictures of any pseudo-underground-celebrity and boom.. up on their blog right away. he showed me some pictures of some girls from nyc who did that to him and crew. my first reaction was.. girls actually dress like that? jesus fucking christ. if that is hipster, i'm extremely secure and happy in my nerd status. you look like a walking fucking garage sale ladies. and not a hip, good one at that.
its so hipster to hate on scenesters and hipsters. i am a hypocrite. i know this.

Going to try and watch 2 filims in the next couple days.. one of which is Bottle Rocket which i know i'm way behind on, but its just gotten to that point where i have to watch it now. dont really need to get into it as i'm sure most people reading this are aware of it.
the second filim is a picture called 'Tell Them Who You Are' ... the story of Mark Wexler, the son of famed cinematographer Haskell Wexler. I haven't seen it yet but it looks like a pretty good father/son piece and a great background on the elder Wexler who was involved with (and fired from) some of the more important pictures of the latter 20th century. Definately worth checking out.
Some records that i listened to today (seeing as how i'm not posting any mp3 links today):

Jerry Butler - Mr. Dream Merchant ... don't have a whole lot of background info on mr. butler. heard his name a grip of times and i'm sure show my lack of complete music knowledge by not having a deeper background story to give this guy. i could google him, but fuck it. its a dope record.
Cannonball Adderley - Somethin' Else .. again, don't really have a whole lot of background info on this record either. He's got a fantastic group playing with him on this record though including Miles Davis, Art Blakey and Sam and Hank Jones.
Al Green - I'm Still In Love With You ... fan-fucking-tastic. period.
Nancy Sinatra - How Does That Grab You? Nice period piece. A lot of the tracks have a rehashed "boots" feel to them. can you blame her though trying to capitalize off that hit? also notable for the song "bang, bang" made recently famous, again, by tarantino in kill bill and by countless rappers sampling it.
Della Reese - Live ... great jazz record ... not necessarily her best, but nice regardless and features the grossly underrated Bill Doggett on the organ.
Dusty Springfield - You Don't Have To Say You Love Me ... i have to admit i bought this strictly for Son of A Preacher Man.. which is just a fantastic song. there's a couple other joints on here as well, but overall.. i wouldn't necessarily classify this as my cup of tea. ooh, how british of me.

now that i got that uberdepressing post out of me, onto the music as depressing posts about my pathetic real life aren't paying the bills... free downloads to you people aren't either, but my guess is you enjoy those much better. so, here we go, my ode to some songs with great drums.. some classic drum break tracks, some jazz drummery at its finest, some non-so-drummy moments and some classic drum programming drums... drummity drum drum drum:

Lee Dorsey - Get Out Of My Life, Woman (The New Lee Dorsey, Sundazed Music Inc 1966) The definitive version of this (besides maybe Allen Toussaint's version, he being the writer and producer of the song and this version, respectively) and a classic song all around. Whether you dig it for its breakbeats, Dorsey's voice or the backing instrumentation by The Meters ... this is just a fantastic song. Enjoy
J.C. Davis - A New Day (is here at last) (45/A New Day LP, New Day 1969/Cali Tex 2005) This is just an incredible funk/soul number by the former band leader for James Brown. He cut this record in his hometown in Ohio and is sought after by beatheads worldwide. What I've encoded for your aural pleasure here is a re-issue from the fantastic LP compiled by Josh Davis aka DJ Shadow featuring almost all of JC's output as well as unreleased works of his. Just a fantastic number and the album/45's are worth tracking down in whatever format you can get them in.
Four Tet - As Serious As Your Life (As Serious As Your Life 12", Domino 2003) Although I was initially prone to have a distaste for Mr. Tet because of all the 'best-thing-since-sliced-bread' reviews he had received, I picked this 12" up on the strength of the J Dilla remix. Needless to say, the Dilla remix was extremely disappointing but put me onto one of the best drum programmers of our generation. Right up there with the aforementioned DJ Shadow as a true king of the drum program.
DJ Shadow - Buidling Steam With A Grain Of Salt (Endtroducing, Mo' Wax 1996) Hard to believe that this record is 10 years old already. Makes me feel really dated. What can i say about Shadow that hasn't been said one million times before and better than me. Best.Drum.Programmer.Ever.Period. His skill is unmatched.. he is a living legacy of the Gene Krupa's, Art Blakey, Buddy Rich and Max Roach's of yesteryear. Even though he probably couldn't play real drums for the life of him (note: author's uneducated guess, probably wrong). On an interesting side note, (and again, way late in this 5 seconds-and-its-old-world-of-the-web) is this link to a Middle School band doing a live rendition of this song... ch-ch-check it out.. <--- link right there, don't miss it
Buddy Rich Vs. Max Roach - Toot Toot Tootsie Goodbye (Rich Versus Roach, Mercury 1959) "A battle of bands and drums between Buddy Rich and Max Roach". Couldn't have put it better myself. Lots of drum solos and crazy drum shenanigans in general. This particular song has a much more focused drum solo break so I decided to pick this one. Also of interest to note is how low Roach's drums are in the mix versus how high Rich's are. Hmmm... c-o-n-...spiracy.
Stezo - It's My Turn Dub (To The Max 12" B-side, Fresh 1989) Not the dopest of rappers to go down in history and probably more well known for his beef with EPMD... and his connection to the one and only legendary Paul C. McKastey. Don't get me wrong... Stezo is not the focus of why i have listed the song here, but more for Paul C. His drum programming and chopping set the standard by which all sample-based producers are judged now. What he accomplished in sampling and chopping using analog technology has still (for the most part) yet to be matched by computers or any of these incredibly overrated computer-based producers cough9thwondercoughcough. A true underdog who should be championed forever, Mr. McKastey's presence is still felt in almost all production/production styles of today. oh, and his brother does studio work for p diddy of all people. and he discovered organized konfusion.. and he produced rakim's first couple records. i could go on forever, but do a google for paul c. and read the excellent article they published on his life.
Nazz - Featherbedding Lover (Nazz Nazz, Atlantic 1969) Not really a great drum-track per se, but Nazz's drummer was fantastic, and Todd Rundgren had a nice way of laying the drums in the mix. Again, this isn't the best example and most people reading this will probably hate it, but i thoroughly enjoyed this Nazz record and i'm trying to plug it a little (and not waste all that time i .. uhh.. wasted recording and encoding this).
Joe Tex - Papa Was Too (actually Yeah Yeah Yeah's - Maps until i can find the damn Papa was Too mp3 i encoded) (Show Me, Atlantic 1966) First off, let me say that i think Joe Tex is a fantastic singer who never really got the props he deserved. Secondly, the drums on this song (as utilized by RZA on ODB's "Snakes", also a personal wu-favorite of mine) are just ridiculous. Recorded in response to Lowell Fulson's "Tramp"... its just a great all around song, and definately worth buying. Although for all you beatheads, i'd suggest staying away from the Live and Lively version of the track as the audience gets in the way of the break. (Authors Note: right while i was about to publish this, i noticed that i can't find the mp3 for this anywhere on my computer so i put up the YYY's "Maps" instead as its a ridiculously good song and the drums on it are fantastic too. Nick Zinner is a really great producer and Karen O is so visceral on this song, you can't go wrong)

Was planning on throwing some Bill Cosby and Quincy joints on herrre too, but figure they can wait for another day... gotta keep'm coming back for more right?

Despite my best intentions of getting out today to take some pic chores to help out with my almost completely-text-based blog, i didn't. i ended up going out for beverages with some friends with whom i haven't seen in a while last night and, due to my newfound sobriety ways, it hit me a lot harder than it used to. so anyhow, seeing as how these things we call blogs seem to flourish because of style rather than substance, and i'm kind've lacking in both right now, i figured i would just post some more music that i'm listening to at the moment. stuff i think people should be checking out. and i sincerely hope all you non-rappity rap rap people out there are checking out the rap and vice versa. if not, at least maybe i'm getting 1 step further to fame by exploiting other people's endeavours. who knows, but its a good way to waste some time in my lonely ass, december-blues-filled life.

J Dilla - Untitled (Donuts, Stones Throw 2006) Here is one of the many bootleg tracks that seem to be floating around the internet concering mr. dilla's forthcoming record on stones throw. not sure how i feel about it.. it is more or less a glorified mixtape/beat cd, but a phenomenal one at that. and considering the conditions in which he recorded these tracks, it is even more fantastic.
Elliott Brood - President(35) (Ambassador, Sixshooter 2005) More of the Brood.. really feeling these guys, and just hope that more people might check them out via this site.. maybe not? A sucker-for-love can try though can't he?
Handsome Boy Modelling School - The Truth (So...How's Your Girl?, Tommy Boy 1999) One of, if not, the best tracks off the debut HBMS album. If you don't know about them, its a side project by Prince Paul (De La Soul, Stetsasonic, Gravediggaz, etc, etc) & Automator (Lovage, Deltron, etc, etc) named after an episode from the classic Chris Elliott sitcom, Get A Life. This track features Roison Murphy from Moloko and J-Live over a ridiculous Galt MacDermott sample. Just beautiful music, definately worth checking out.
DJ Shadow/Radiohead - Would You Buy A War From This Man?/The Gloaming Remix (Bootleg, DJ Shadow limited 7") Unofficial, official remix of The Gloaming by Mr. Shadow. Never was 'officially' released because of the vocal samples involving George Dubya, but very much a legitimate remix (not some internet mashup shenanigans).
DJ Shadow vs. Keane - We Might As Well Be Strangers DJ Shadow Remix (WMSWBS 10"/12", Interscope 2005) The old new black seemed to be hip-hop based producers remixing British bands (see Madlib/The Bees below). This is a pretty damn good remix, although it does borderline on the emo'y side of things so I could definately see how it wouldn't appeal to all, but I like it. So check it out.
The Bees / Band of Bees - Chicken Payback (Madlib's Soul Distortion Remix, Virgin/White Label 2005) Nice surf-rock from this British band which is set to blow up Stateside or languish in obscurity. Not a huge fan of the original, but Madlib lays down some incredible jazz drums a la Buddy Rich or Max roach at their finest (or maybe Krupa? those are the first names that came to mind when i initially heard this). Not sure why its labelled as a 'Soul' Distortion Remix when I think jazz would be much more applicable. But hey, regardless of genres (which i absolutely hate), this remix is fantastic.
Siah & Yeshua dapoED - The Cure For Stagnation (Deeper Concentration, OM Records 1998) Another one of those songs that even people who hate rap can't seem to front on. Just incredible worthsmithery from two of today's finest poets. Unfortunately, Siah retired shortly after and is now focused on politics and changing the world and whatnot. Good for him. Yeshua on the other hand kinda fell off... what happened Ed?
Handsome Boy Modelling School - Breakdown (White People, 2004 Elektra/WEA) A song off the sophomore album from Paul and Automator, this time featuring Jack Johnson (??!?) of all people. Actually, one of my favorite songs off the new album, and its a pretty solid all around record with appearances by everyone from Cat Power to Casual to Del to Franz Ferdinand to the boys from Mars Volta and Lord Finesse. Another album definately worth checking out and still readily available.
Built To Spill - I Would Hurt A Fly ... don't know too much about this song (i could google and drop info but i'm terribly lazy) other than it is pretty frickin good. i'd definately like to check more built.. material but, i'm somewhat hesitant to purchase anything outright, and i'm not a huge fan of downloading music, so.. someone hit me up

Picked up Slapstick by Kurt Vonnegut again for the time in a couple years today. What a great book. It's also where i got the title for this post. Vonnegut is truly a brilliant writer, as I'm sure most of you know, and if you don't ... well, go check him out, he won't let you down. I still don't think nearly enough people are reading this, and if they are, they're not giving me feedback. What's an audience if they can't tell you how terrible/boring/unfunny you are? Finally got around to encoding some of the music I've been raving about as of late.. so here you go, the main reason you came here anyway: Cordial Invitation by Giant Drag. Probably my favorite song off their record, Hearts and Unicorns, for the moment... i mean any track that has lyrics like 'your dream is my nightmare' sung by a woman who writes songs called Kevin Is Gay or You Fuck Like My Dad is good shit in my book. Definately worth buying the album as I've stated over and over again, I think. Also figured I'd finally post some Elliott Brood that I've been raving about and finally caved in and bought. According to their website, they're 'death country'... but, sounds more like alt-country/indie-rocky to me... but, then again, I've never been one for identifying genres. Still waiting on that new Hot Chip single to hit local record stores so i can post up here... definately worth buying. BTW: I have next to no journalistic/reviewer integrity (I don't consider myself a critic by any means) so send me free vinyl/cd's/tickets and I'll plug away. Surfing myspace trying to find suitable people to check out this site and i came across this long-forgotten-by-me song from Radiohead. From the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack, probably one of my favourite 'head songs of all time. Again, if you're still reading at this point, it is much appreciated. Thank you for putting up with the amateurishness of this website/blog/ordeal and bear with me as I'm trying to put some design upgrades on it in the next couple weeks so that it actually looks half decent and not so goddamn completely generic. Giant Drag - Hearts and Unicorns. This album is just a little bit of fantastic. Good enough that i'm having a problem deciding what song to post to truly show how good a record this is. You Fuck Like my dad is my nomination for song title of the year.. and a great song to boot. Cordial Invitation.. another great song, i really could go on forever. All in all.. a great record worth buying, so do it.
Elliott Brood - Ambassador. Talked about these guys enough without really knowing too much about their music so i caved in and bought this new album from them. Not a huge variety of sound, but still a pretty damn good effort from beginning to end. Off the top, President (35) and Wolfgang really stuck out to me. Still trying to track down their Tin Type EP for Cadillac Dust which is the joint that put me onto them. Another great album that everyone should go buy.
Hot Chip - Coming On Strong. Pretty good album, not incredible, but pretty good. Nothing on it compares to the clip i heard of that over and over joint i raved about before and i should have my hands on that single by early next week, so i'll post it when i get it. Definately worth checking out the album.. its not as solid a 'go buy it' endorsement as the elliott brood and the giant drag records, but its... quirky and nice. download it, then go buy it (if you like it).
Joe Tex - Live and Lively. This guys voice really does it for me. His drummer does too. He just kills songs like Papa Was Too, Show Me, Skinny Legs And All, etc, etc. If you don't know Joe Tex.. get up on him. Amazing funk/soul singer who doesn't get nearly enough props as he should.

too many music reviews as of late. not enough philosophical rantings. not enough other media reviews/rantings. i need to get my camera out and take some serious photography-style pictures as opposed to the narcissistic-hold-the-camera-away-from-you-for-an-obscure-photo-picture. problem is, if i dont take pictures of me, no one will ever know i ever existed. i think. so again, instead of the usual links to random shenanigans, i'm just going to make a list of stuff i like and that you should like too if you want to be oh-so-hip as me. sarcasm never translates well to text. oh, and this isn't like the hottest new shit out there either.. these are a few of my favorite things at this exact moment.

Sia - Breathe Me. Again, the irony in talking about how this wasn't going to be about music and then going to music right away. can't escape it. this song is about a year and a half old and was the ending song for six feet under and apparently is being used to promote this new movie, derailed. don't know much beyond it other than its just a beautiful, sad song. and to all the haters yelling fag.. what can i say, you're just jealous of my man purse.
Six Feet Under - yeah, it was pretentious, but it was also extremely well written and with the exception of the soap-opera'y moments at the tail end of the fourth season/beginning of fifth, it was well executed as well. was upset to see this one go. but long live hbo, they've just got incredible television.. can't say they've let me down yet (haven't ever really seen sex and the city and i can only complain about them cancelling Carnivale for soooo long), and don't think they will any time soon with the new Sopranos and The Wire seasons coming up.
The Wire - this show is just ridiculously good, and i'm not sure about State side, but criminally slept on up here in Canada. just an incredible show, if you ain't seen it, go rent the dvd's of season 1 (amazing) and season 2 (kind of a let down, but only in comparison to season 1 and season 3; also completely necessary to understand the whole omar/stringer bell story).
Arrested Development - any intelligent person in their right mind should enjoy this show. bold statement, but this show is too good for what is happening to it. people.. start watching this fucking show.. its incredible, and if you don't, we're just going to get more crappy shows like The War at Home... or whatever that atrocity is called that has temporarily replaced AD.
Since i'm on a serious television tangent, i'd just like to mention Sleeper Cell again. This show has been excellent so far and is only 5 episodes in, so you can be on the boat before it becomes a bandwagon jumping thing. Incredible perspective on Islam that i think is not nearly well enough explored in the United States and in a lot of cases, the world all over. I figure this is a very north american-centric perspective, but muslims are being persecuted worldwide for what a few extremists believe in. Remember people, one of the meanings of Islam in arabic is peace, and most muslims live according to that.
Not sure if this is clearly obvious to the readers, but many of my postings are done in a very stream-of-consciousness style as i have no real... theme or intention when i begin to write them and i just see where it takes me. as a result, this next item isn't really one of my favourite things: the support of Israel's holocaust of Palestinians by the United States and many of their allies. Not only is what the Israeli government doing immoral but has no legal standing at all and actually is against International Law, yet no one speaks out about this on a global scale. By no means am i sympathizing with suicide bombers or any other act of "terrorism" (i really hate that word as it can only be defined by the perspective of the person using it) but when you look at the atrocities the Israeli's have committed against the Palestinians.. is it no wonder that they go to such drastic measures? I'm sure i'll piss off a fair amount of people with my views here.. but you know what? fuck you. for a people who will throw the genocide of 6 million of their people in your face any time you criticize them, they're doing a pretty goddamn good job of repeating it in modern times but with the palestinians playing the part of the genocidal victims this time. makes me sick. do something about this if you can, anything. its just ridiculous that this is still going on. what the world needs now is love ... and the actions by both parties here are doing nothing but furthering us from that goal. only love is beyond good and evil.
Diagram - If You Were A Song... This is a song by a friend of mine who i think is an incredibly talented musician who needs to become famous already. His material is very much in the same vein as Postal Service except for the fact his shit pre-dated PS by a couple years... tried to get him to put it out then, but like most great artists, he's his own worse critic. So, check it out, leave a comment about how you feel about it and maybe we can convince him to release more dope, heartfelt music. See.. i'm not completely ego-driven.. its not just me who should be famous, but my friends as well. only difference being they have talent... but hell, if they become famous i can always try that by-proxy-fame thing.
Getting fat. with all this boredom and not so much to do (yeah, i'm still unemployed, who could believe it?) i find myself getting fat and fast. not necessarily one of my favorite things per se, but i'm overindulging in some food that i ain't really did in a while. enjoying it while it lasts, which won't be much longer with my impending international rock stardom.
This blog. As much as i'd like to hate on these sort've things, and for the most part do, i'm enjoying putting my two cents out into this thing i invented, the internet. although i'm still not sure if anyone actually reads any of my musings or whether they just go to the links/mp3 downloads and whatnot, its nice to imagineer that some people are getting a kick out of this shit. plus i'm bored and it helps pass the time.
Girls named Laura. Goes hand in hand with me being the contemporary Nick Hornsby/John Cusack's character from High Fidelity. Often been compared to him and his record fanaticisim/inability to commit/etc/etc; his girlfriend in the movie's name is Laura. I currently have two Laura's in my life at the moment, one of which i've known for years and one who is brand new into my life but both are pretty much the shit and for different reasons. And they both help me maintain my sanity, so thank you.

Something really dope about the aesthetic and general style of that era. Definately recommend it to anyone into top hats and monocles, and if you're ever in Toronto, its @ 672 Queen Street West (but you can learn all this stuff from the website, which i haven't even visited yet). The owner is a really nice guy too, so it'd be great to support him.
Barbara ***** - don't really want to blow up her spot, and not even entirely sure she ever reads this, but even if she does, i think she deserves the anonymity without being full aware of me talking about her herrrre. Great woman, helped me turn my life around and will be at the top of my thank you list (along with God, Kwaanza and Dipset) when i win my first grammy/oscar/emmy/golden globe/nobel peace prize/pie eating contest. really helped me find myself. i know, this is some gay shit. but she's worthy of the praise and whatever ridicule i endure as a result of said praise is a small price to pay for her help.

Wolf Parade. yeah i know.. everyone knows about them already. unfortunately for me and my vinyl-buying ways, all those mp3-downloading/promo cd getting/cd buying hipsters can usually beat me to the punch on these sort've things as a lot of bands like this are hesitant to press up vinyl first as it costs them more. perfectly understandable.. just my excuse for being so late on this. Buy the album.. for fans of Interpol, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, etc.
Elliott Brood. Yeah, second time plugging these guys. Some great shit, trying to get my hands on a copy of their first single/demo so i can put up some mp3's for all to enjoy. coming soon. but in the meantime, go buy their new cd out on sixshooter records while i wait for it to be pressed to vinyl.
Dali. nothing in particular makes him my favorite right at this exact moment, he's just a perennial (sp?) favourite of mine. best.artist.ever. and one of the five geniuses that will be recognized in the history of mankind along with Nietzsche, Da Vinci, Steve Guttenberg and myself.
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy. again, fairly old by online standards despite the fact they (Danger Mouse + Cee-Lo = Gnarls Barkley) have yet to actually officially put something out. So this is for everyone who doesn't have this yet. enjoy, i think its a little slice of heaven. and i can't wait for the re-united goodie mob album. soul food was/is/always will be one of my favorite records. long before it was the hip thing to enjoy southern rap. and i aint even that much up on southern rap. but david banner, paul wall, and bun b are all the shit in my books... at least for the moment. oh, and banner is doing some shit with dj shadow, so for all of you who aren't convinced yet, wait for that project and jump on his dick then.
Flaming Lips. i remember these guys circa them playing the peach pit (i swear i didn't watch that shit) and not being terribly impressed. fast forward about 10 years to Yoshimi Battles... and i was a quick convert. what a fucking great band. if you're not yet a fan, just check out their Fight Test EP. not only do you get one of the best songs from Yoshimi.. but amazing covers of Beck, Kylie Minogue (sp?) and Radiohead and a trailer for their (The Lips) upcoming feature length film. plus two other songs.
Latyrx - Lady Don't Tek No. This is just one of those songs. even people who hate rap seem to like this song. this was one of my first introductions to Latyrx way back as i happened to pick up the Muzapper Mixes EP before copping their full length. just fantastic, timeless funk music. and incredible flows. if you ain't heard this yet..stop sleeping. also a great track to dedicate to any amazing girl/woman in your life, but don't abuse it.
Diplo mashups and Four Tet singles. First off, let me say that i'm fucking sick of mashups being dubbed the new craze. Putting vocals over another track was the foundation of hip hop music, which, last time i checked was about 30 years old, give or take a few. People are acting likes its the new black, when clearly, gay cowboys are. Z-Trip also did an incredible job with Uneasy Listening Vol. 1 years back, but no one was about mashups then and that album went largely overlooked up until this recent mashup craze. So.. fuck mashups. and with that in mind, diplo did a fantastic mashup of TV on The Radio & Afrika Bambaataa on the Hollertronix Vol. 2 EP. Definately worth buying, but ch-ch-check it out herrrre. As for Mr. Tet.. i was very hesitant to check his stuff as i have a general hate on for any laptop based music (despite the fact a majority of modern hiphop and most music in general is being produced on computers, including my own), but decided to check out his single for 'As Serious As Your Life' a couple years back on the strength of the J Dilla remix. have to say, the dilla remix did nothing for me, but the original version blew my mind. his drum programming is ridiculous. really worth checking out. not going to post a link to this cause i'm too lazy to encode this record and couldn't find a version on the net. might change soon, who knows. my point is, four tet is definately worth checking out. especially now, considering his madvillain remix ep/mini-lp and his most recent single 'a joy' featuring verses from one of the best rappers ever, Percee P. definately cop that 12" if you can or the neato 3x7" set.

Stones Throw.. always a class act, post their own 'eulogy' to Richard Pryor here. Also be on the lookout for the new J Dilla record from them entitled Donuts. I hear nothing but good things about it and your favorite producer's favorite producer really needs the support.
I know i'm probably super late on these guys but Hot Chip dropped a pretty interesting record in 2004 which I believe was just rereleased this year in North America on Astralwerks. "Coming On Strong" is very much in the same vein as Postal Service's Give Up and definately worth checking if you're a fan of PS. Also, if anyone can hook me up with an mp3 of their new single, specifically the b-side, "Just Like We (Breakdown) DFA Remix", I'd be more than thankful and will dutifully put it up here. Only heard a clip on TurntableLab and have to say it sounds fanfuckingtastic.
Beware: Dipset Dickriding. Juelz Santana's new record is great. Like all other dipset material, when it hits, it's really, REALLY dope; but when it doesn't.. well, its terrible. Thankfully, Juelz leans more towards the former than the latter. Definately worth checking out. Yeah, no links, you've heard it all on some medium already, now go buy it.

I really feel I'm not posting nearly enough rap links (i know i said i'd do more rappity rap rap in my last post, and trust me, it's coming). But again, i'd like some feedback from people on what i'm posting. am i not covering enough rap? am i covering too much non-rap? are people enjoying the audio that i am posting? i realized just now that the comments part was setup only for registered users. my apologies. i am stupid and got caught up in my own hype and amazingness. anyhow, i fixed that. so, like... leave comments and shit. now back to your regular tuned programming:

Bun B is about to drop a great album by the name of "Trill", if he hasn't already. Like all hot new rap albums, it features the requisite track with a fantastic verse from Mr. Carter.
Talked a little bit about that Beck record and my utter devotion to El-P production, here's his contribution, a remix of Scarecrow, to Beck's remix record, "Guerolito". Now go buy it.
Not sure how new this is, but i picked up the latest Arcade Fire 7" and what can i say? its more... Arcade Fire. same sound, nothing spectacular, but still pretty damn good. Link coming soon.

Hopefully more audio will be posted later today if i have time, got to run though so enjoy the updates and check all the posts, a little bit of everything for everyone (including my own neurosis/petty personal problems). and for the record, i post these links in hopes that people will actually go out and support real, tangible music. go buy a cd, or a record or a tape.. it can just do something for you that no mp3 in the world could ever replace. we're living in an increasingly disposably-inclined time. the hottest new music gets blasted out of ipods for two weeks before the next blog/hipster tips us to the next new thing at which point we're done with last week's material.. for no other reason than its *so* last week. We keep doing this and not only are we increasing society's already ridiculous levels of impatience and need for immediate satisfaction but we're creating a landscape in which no artists can truly be appreciated as they become shuffled away in someone's ipod list. download. play to death. delete. repeat. let's break the cycle. (and yes, i understand the total hypocrisy and/or irony of someone posting about this on an audio blog but music is my passion and you have to fight for what you're passionate about right?)

Elliott Brood ... can't say i know too much about these guys other than that they're Canadian and from Toronto, I believe. Came across them thanks to my homie Chris from Vice Records; they're definately worth checking out and got a great video for Cadillac Dust here.
Common People - I Have Been Alone & Take From You (Of The People / By The People / For The People, Capitol 1969) Not terribly familiar with terms to describe different kinds of rock music, but I believe this has been described as Psych-Rock... again, not entirely sure.. but two songs that I'm really feeling, and definately represent where I've been at as of late.
Fort Minor feat. Various Artists - Bloc Party / Banquet & GNR / Sweet Child Of Mine (DJ Green Lantern Presents Fort Minor - We Major, Mixtape 2005) Mix CD released to promote the release of the Fort Minor album. Can't say I thought I would ever champion something involving the rap-guy from Linkin Park, but both these tracks have been getting constant rotation from me. Juelz Santana and Celph Titled on the same song? Wow.. don't think i ever saw him going from sampling Windows sounds to rapping with crack in the flesh. Needless to say, both of these songs are ridiculous, it's too bad they couldn't make the actual album.
Rest in peace to Richard Pryor.. one of the funniest men of our generation.

well.. doing whatever i can to get some more people to check out this blog. don't have any terribly funny links to go too in this post; but i'm super pissed that my doctor went public with this. as far as music goes, i wish i had some unifying theme to connect all this random music i'm putting up. i guess that could be the unifying theme in itself.. just random music that i'm listening to and appreciate.. an eclectic mix if you will. anywho, here's some stuff that i think should be dominating the charts right now:

De La Soul - Oodles Of O's & Millie Pulled A Pistol On Santa (De La Soul is Dead, Tommyboy 1991) What can i say about these two songs that haven't been said already a million times before. Two of my favorite songs off one of the best records of all time. Great antithesis to all the hardcore rap that domineered boomboxes at the time and a true testament to Prince Paul's genius. Just a great record in general and if you don't own ...is Dead, shame on you. Also as a sidenote, these are off the cd, not the vinyl, and yeah i know they're not obscure, but just reminiscing about one of my favorite records of all time.
Mars Volta - The Widow (Live) (Frances The Mute 12" B-Side, GSL 2005) Can't say i'm terribly familiar with omar and cedric's output, but i tend to get the feeling they go off on way too many prog-rock tangents as i learned from skimming through the full length that these are from. perhaps i'm wrong, who knows.. what i do know is.. the widow was my favorite song off that album except for the 2 minute + aforementioned prog-rock tangent they go off on. on this live version, they forgo that part and actually eff with cedric's vocals.. a much superior version in my humble opinion.
Nexx Level Click - Past The Basic (Past The Basic 12", Nexx Level Records Late 90's/Early 00's) This is a great 12" featuring a really slept on crew. Smoothe Da Hustler (whose Once Upon A Time In America is criminally slept on), Trigger Tha Gambler, D.R. Period, DV Alias Khrist and several other members made up the Nexx Level Click. Its one of these little known members whose now making a lot of noise and thats Papoose. Expect big things from him in the next couple years, and as far as I know, this was his first appearance on vinyl, pre-dating his Alphabetical Slaughter 12". From a Nexx Level Click/Records compilations whose name escapes me.
Cam'ron - Killa Cam & Down and Out (Purple Haze, Roc-A-Fella 2004) To any haters of the whole dipset/killa cam set, i present these two examples of just amazing tracks. i don't see how anyone could not like these, and this is coming from a former dipset-hater. when they're dope, they're really dope, otherwise they are terrible. (again these are off cd cause my vinyl copy is clean and sort've takes away from the complete dopeness that these songs represent.)
Stepping off from the music again just to give my 2 cents on Rome. Not entirely sure how i feel about this series... at first i was disappointed that it wasn't Gladiator: The TV Series, then i got into its storyline.. and then it got into some Gladiator-type shit, and then they killed Caesar. i just feel like hbo is really rushing through a lot of their material as of late. the finale for curb your enthusiasm was pretty weak and i thought was the series finale up until the last little bit, but who knows with hbo, look at what they did to Carnivale. if you're not up on Carnivale, i definately suggest renting the first season and finding the second season by whatever means necessary. really great show, highly entertaining and finally got to the point where shit was going down and hbo cancelled it. if you are up on carnivale, write to hbo.. they have to bring that shit back.
Third Sight - Dr. Douche Powder f. Insomniac (Murderdeathkill EP, Disgruntled 2000) Little known west coast hip hop crew which features Jihad on vocals, D-Styles on the 1's and 2's and production by Dufunk the stalker and Raggedy Andy. Beyond that, i don't know too much about this group other than they dropped two other 12's prior to this one and an lp in 98 entitled The Golden Shower Hour. They're also about to release a brand new LP entitled The Symbionese Liberation Album. be on the lookout for it.
Port Authority - Port Authority Bus Blues (New Now Navy Band, US Navy 197?) Cool split record from two United States Navy Bands, the Commodores and Port Authority. This is probably the most well known of their material, especially amongst beat heads for the extended drum break/solo near the end of the track. Overall pretty nice sound considering this is from a record pressed up to attract people into signing up for the Navy. Surprisingly (or not?), Port Authority actually cut about 4 records (that i know of) and all are really worth checking out if you can get your hands on them.

No.. this is not a porn posting.. just a link to yet another reason why i think the usa is at least 1/2 full of crazies. how could you possibly have re-elected this man? Friend of mine came across this and linked me to it. its uhm.. interesting? put a smile on my face at least. and i got that whole december/winter blues thing going on, so maybe if you're afflicted, it can do the same for you. Been on a real Beck binge as of late, alternating between his new record/remix version of it and Sea Change, which i slept on first time around. here's one of my favorite beck songs off of sea change(itunes only sorry, unless you got that winamp plugin, this is off the cd) and i must mention the fantastic cover of golden age by flaming lips. track it down if you can, i might post it here too. who knows. also reminds me of a great nine inch nails remix by one of my favourite contemporary producers, El-Producto. he really did justice to only which i found way too poppy in its original incarnation. don't remember having substitute teachers like this but still not sure whether that's a good thing or a bad thing. really procrastinating on this mix cd thing, but i would like some feedback from people on whether they're feeling the songs i've posted..that's it for now, think i'll throw some more music up later.. leave a comment, please, i need some goddamn feedback or at least some verification that people are actually reading this.

Millie Jackson - Leftovers (Still Caught Up, Spring/Polydor 1975) Nice little song from Millie on her follow up record to Caught Up, features a nice shit talking intro and some good swagger throughout.
Clara Ward - What The World Needs Now Is Love & The Impossible Dream (Soul & Inspiration, Capitol 196?) Really great versions of two classics. Shows a wide range, and great production by Mr. Axelrod.
The Young Rascals - Land of 1000 Dances (Collections, Atlantic 197?) Don't know too much about this group, but found this LP in the garbage room in my building along with some other great stuff that i'm sure i'll feature on here eventually. this is a great hand clapping feet stomping track, too short unfortunately.
Screaming Lord Sutch - L-O-N-D-O-N & Flashing Lights (Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends, Cotillion/Atlantic 1970) Interesting scream-rock... or rockabilly or.. i'm not sure how to describe his sound. Interesting sums it up. Of note for the players who played on this record, including Jimmy Page (who co-wrote most of the songs with Sutch and co-produced the record with Sutch), Daniel Edwards and John Bonham on "Flashing Lights" and Kent Henrey, Noel Redding, Martin Kohl and Bob Metke on "L-O-N-D-O-N".
Stealers Wheel - Johnny's Song (Stealers Wheel, A&M 1972) Although they're much more well known for the Tarantino-revived 'Stuck In The Middle With You', which is a great song, this track on the flip side has a really funky intro and an overall great aesthetic. Definately worth checking out.

spent most of today just surfing across the net for cool stuff to link onto here, my brand spanking new blog. i wish i was all up on this years ago. it would make the getting famous bit so much easier. although i did do something very similar to blogs pre-blogs with my man Chris from Vice Records on www.verisimilitude.ca but i don't think that site exists anymore. needless to say i haven't checked it in ages and somehow i doubt our/my content is still on thurrr. so i'm listening to some babe ruth right now, something else i plan on writing about soon and i might make some music in a bit because its friday night, which means that i'm home alone with nothing to do but entertain myself. so i'll make some food, listen to some records.. maybe make a mix cd to put up here and press up, maybe make some money. btw, again.. if anyone in the toronto area needs to hire someone for anything, i'm pretty versatile.. will do porn if i *HAVE* to. anyhow, here's some stuff i came across that i found interesting:

Adult Swim keeping it real. Love the fact that these guys represent a very much ignored part of hiphop to the (kind of) masses. Schooly D doing the theme music to Aqua Teen, plus them sponsoring the Danger Doom record. I really could go on forever about MF Doom, but.. i'll save that for another day when i'm super bored cause he is deserving of his own post altogether. Danger Mouse on the other hand... overrated anyone?
Found some more Chuck Norris type pages but for Vin Diesel and Mr. T. Seems that most of them are interchangable, but there were a few that made me smirk. This is what i do when i'm extremely bored.
Not sure if anyone got to see it, but South Park's episode about Scientology was hysterical and so spot-on. The whole R. Kelly / Tom Cruise / John Travolta closet bit was pure genius. Here's a clip for those who missed it. The whole episode was comedic gold too. Wish i could link up the whole episode for people. will work on that too.

I don't know about everyone else, but i definately feel like a Lost crackhead. I can't believe i have to wait over a month for a new episode. and i just started watching it a couple weeks ago. and i thought it was the cold that was making me shake. no way.. but on a sort've entertaining note, two of the stars got busted for drinking and driving and they sure as hell don't look purdie. hell, makes me think i could be a movie/tv star (hollywood... call me already)

i realize that probably no one will ever read this blog, despite my dreams of it being my shot at becoming famous, so i'm just going to use it as an outlet for my own personal frustrations with my life. why do i push away anyone who ever gets close to me? why can't i make that leap of faith and trust someone enough to ever let them know me, before it's too late? why can't i ever be content with what i have? i used to subscribe to the nietzschian ideology that we only further our own development through pain and suffering, but i guess that was just a way to rationalize my own self-destructive behaviour and my masochistic tendencies. i don't think i ever was happy because i forced myself not to be happy. it was an excuse for not doing what i wanted to do, or should've been doing. as i previously noted, forgive me for the egocentric nature of this post, but this is the best way for me to figure myself out, and maybe get some input from you the (non-existant) reader. anyhow, what got me started on this particular post was listening to the wonderful Alicia Keys song, "If I Ain't Got You" . She really summed up my feeling on relationships with this one to a tee. What's the point in being successful at anything if you haven't got anyone to share it with? Not that i'm some huge success with many accolades to my name, but i have accomplished a lot of things in my life, although not necessarily nearly as many as i would like, but, i've never really had anyone to share these accomplishments with. as a result they feel like empty accolades. at the same time, i realize its not the healthiest of perspectives to rely on someone else to ensure your happiness, or inspire it. but really now... what is the point of doing anything in life if at the end of the day you're alone and disconnected from everything? that pretty much sums up my attitude at the moment, although i can't necessarily say that my perspective is objective as i'd like it to be. some people want it all, but i don't want nothing at all, if i ain't got you. whine whine whine. that's all i do. fuck, i need to focus on music or something else to entertain anyone who actually does come read this who doesn't care about me and my petty problems. So....

The Aristocrats - finally got to see this movie and have to say it is a very interesting film indeed. Not necessarily funny per se and definately not everyone's cup of tea... but very interesting insight into the comedic world. Definately have to watch it again, but i have to give penn gilette daps for making this film. again, just really interesting to see the behind the scenes (sort've) of the comedic world.
Nazz - Nazz Nazz - the second album by teenage prodigy Todd Rundgren and crew. My first real introduction to Rundgren and his musical stylings and i have to say I'm really impressed. Really interesting sort've brit-rock meets psych/early prog rock. not sure if thats that good a description, but i'm not terribly knowledgable in the rock field and this is my attempt at describing the sound. Definately worth checking out, and I'd like to track down more of his records, including the first Nazz and his later works like Runt (I also bought A Wizard / A True Star which is also very good, just haven't really digested it yet). Want to give a big thanks to Sheldon over at In The Groove Records for putting me on to his work. Definately check out the website or if you're in the Toronto area, hit the shop up on Queen St. East.
Quincy Jones - Smackwater Jack - a really great album by an extremely talented artist / producer. Q is just one of those talents that can't be denied. Although i've always been aware of his music from a distant perspective (this is the first album of his i own / bought, beyond lp's that he produced), this really opened my eyes to what he's capable of. Big shouts to my man Roozebeh for putting me onto this record.
Bill Cosby - Hooray for the Salvation Army! - great record with Bill singing over some amazing instrumentation by the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band. Great versions of some classic songs, a little something for everyone on hurrr.
Lord Sutch - And Heavy Friends & Hands Of Jack The Ripper - what can i say about this fellow? These two albums are incredible and feature some amazing cohorts including Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Noel Redding, Keith Moon, etc, etc. These are the kind of records that blow my mind in the fact that they're not more commonly known. Possibly not everyone's cup of tea, but with the personnel involved, you figure these would be more well known records. Apparently not. Like all the records i'm reviewing today, i'm going to try and get some audio clips up, so bare with me please.

just going across a bunch of blogs on this site and realized how inept i really am at doing these things, i'm really only used to music blogs like www.cocaineblunts.com and www.unkut.com and riff raffian websites like those. not to say that they're basic, but they're really only about obscure music, which seems like a fairly simple topic to cover. i really want to cover a lot more than that.. not just obscure music, but, overlooked media, whether it be film, music or books.. or even websites. not sure where i'm going with this post other than i was really disappointed with my last post in contrast to what i see on all these other blogs. maybe i'm just not as gifted as i once thought i was? well, no way to know for sure unless i keep plugging away at this and hope for the best. had a conversation with a good friend that really brightened up my day. reminded me that it doesn't rain all the time, which as gloomy as it sounds, often represents my state of mind. i really wish i knew where i could host some music and clips for everyone to check out, but as i noted before, i guess that will come with time. so not sure what else to put here... need a dj? email me... need an actor? email me... need a line cook? email me... i need a job, got any opportunities.. hit me up, all play and no work make jack something something.

The Introduction

Well, here it is, my one shot at almost instantaneous fame. I could lie and tell you I spent hours labourously writing and rewriting some witty masterpiece that rivals the best of those other blogs to impress you, my hopeful following, but in all actuality, this is being done on the fly. So forgive my terrible grammar and/or speeling. Now I know what you're thinking, who is this guy? and why is he complaining about not being famous? Well... simply put, I'm an undiscovered international rock/film star waiting to be discovered or about to take the world by storm.. depending on how lazy I feel that day. What have I done to warrant this self-appointed title? Hmmm.. that's a good question. I'm not terribly attractive, not terribly intelligent or funny... my wit is pretty tired and consists of iconoclastic references and in terms of actual accomplishments, I have next to none. I'm a high school drop out, a university drop out; a perpetual line cook/any other terrible, menial job and avid dreamer. I did, however, invent the internet and the female orgasm. So I'm not completely useless. I was one of the pioneers of the online music movement (read: one of those people the RIAA would love to get their hands on), and also kind've a DJ in real life. And by that I mean spin obscure music for a handful of friends that seems to be dwindling with each passing year.
There is no real discernable reason for me starting this new paragraph as I mentioned above, my grammar/spelling/punctuation is terrible but it occured to me that people who just come across this page may be intidimated by one giant log of text. Furthermore on the whole about me topic... I'm a part time actor (only part time because there aren't a lot of parts for John Merrick-types), part time producer (gag, everyone seems to be one these days, thanks Lil Jon and Kanye~!) and full time depressionist. So what I'm attempting to do here is show the world that I should be famous, whether it be by my obscure music knowledge, my acting, my music, my philosophical musics or just the amazingness that is me incarnate.
So what else can I put down here to interest people.. I don't really have a whole lot of accomplishments under my belt: I'm a high school drop out and a university drop out; I've spent most of my working life as a line cook or in a variety of positions which I've overqualified and underpaid for. God, there goes my shizer grammar again. It's terrible when you try to be funny because it comes across as so forced and I feel thats what the majority of this is going to look like to most people. Anyhow, further onto my accomplishments... I'm perpetually single and really lack the interpersonal skills to keep any relationship going for any extended period of time (this is the accomplishment of accomplishments! yay me!@) but I don't want this to come across as some sort've emo-y type 'nobody understands me, i'm so alone' type shenanigans.
So nobody really understands me, and i feel alone a lot of the time. or disconnected at least. part of the reason behind this whole blog thing, beyond the fame, fortune and bitches was a medium unto which i could get things off my chest that bother me. So forgive me if any of these posts seem extremely egocentric and focus on me and my petty problems, but i'm an egotistical bastard and really only care about me. trying to work on that too. i'd love feedback from people who could inspire me, to help me shape what i will become. i was trying to think of some poetic way of putting that, but, thats all i got. sorry.
It's terrible cause I have so much to say and this is the second time I'm doing this as somehow my goddamn browser deleted all of my previous posting before i could put it up. yay me and my technopeasantry ways. so, things you can look forward to on this blog in the near future as i master this fine art of bloggery: daily/weekly musings of a semi-crazy recluse from toronto, canada, eh; rants about music and other media including mp3s which i'm going to try and post when i can figure out how to get them hosted and desperate appeals to the opposite sex to give me a shot or at least attempts to impress them with my uhh... i'll get back to you on that one.
Maybe i need a tattoo or a fancy haircut? or a piercing. Women of the world wide web... or wow's as i refer to them, i could definately use your help/sympathy lust, and hope you're more than willing to indulge. Anyhow, i think i'm manic depressive, so sorry if i seem across the board on this one.. can't help it? like a famous poet once said, "I'm not an alcoholic, I just drink a lot, and I'm not a neurotic, I just think a lot." Not exactly sure how that applies but i figure if i throw in some fancy esoteric quotes (which i'm a vault of, on top of tonnes of other useless information) that i might be able to impress some readers (read: ladies) out there, and at least build up some sort've readership. It'd be nice to be remembered. even if its only from some blog. That last link is to a great site www.explodingdog.com which i found to be extremely cathartic as i ran through all the drawrings.
Anywho, I hope there are still some people out there reading and that this isn't done completely in vain. perhaps i even struck a chord with some people out there? aah... if wishes were fishes. I can't be the only one like me, or at least i have to keep telling myself that.
